Research Interests
Broadly, I am interested in the ecology and evolution of ocean microbial communities. My current focus is on diatoms and their relationship with bacteria for acquisition of organic complexed iron. I conduct laboratory experiments using the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum probing the molecular pathways implicated in the uptake of siderophores, focusing on the function or iron starvation induced proteins. Further, I am investigating the relationship between siderophore producing bacteria and P. tricornutum in model symbioses. In order to assess the relevance of my findings to natural ocean communities, I work with the metatranscriptomic and metagenomic datasets collected during the Tara Oceans expedition.

I have previously worked on understanding the role of vitamin B12 in mutualistic exchanges between algae and heterotrophic bacteria. The work led to novel insights into the evolution of dependencies in microbial consortia based on metabolic exchanges. I proposed that principles derived from this work could be used for the establishment of synthetic communities for use in biotechnology in a process we termed “synthetic ecology” and specifically for the production of biodiesel from green algae.
